René Macias, originally from inner-city Chicago, Illinois, serves as the Director of Employee Wellness for the Department of Safety. Prior City and County of Denver experience includes time as the Safety Administrator assigned to the Department of Safety. René served 21 years in the fire service where he held ranks of firefighter, engineer, company officer, Battalion Chief, and Division Chief of Planning and Logistics. During his time in the fire service, René spent 10 years as a lead coordinator or instructor for fire academies spanning both career and volunteer fire departments. Over his years in public safety, René has gained extensive knowledge and experience in workplace injuries, preventative care programs, fitness standards, mental health initiatives, process improvement, and community diversity.

René has an associate degree in Fire Science Technology, a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science – Corporate Wellness, and a master's degree in public administration from the University of Colorado at Denver. Aside from daily responsibilities, René Macias also serves on the Board of Directors for Thompson Valley Emergency Medical Services Health District and as a commissioner for the Loveland Urban Renewal Authority.
